Settling for the cheap shit August 1, 2007

Not so long ago, when money was even tighter than it is now, we found ourselves
needing a new rice cooker, but I wasn’t willing to go out and by a fifteen
dollar el-cheapo rice cooker like the last one. I saved my pennies and waited
months until we could afford to buy a
Zojirushi
rice cooker
. It cost us eighty dollars, but I’ve never regretted it, and I’m
impressed every time I use it. I decided to keep my
Aprilia
scooter
, not because it traveled fast enough to take me beyond my local
neighborhood, but because I was unwilling to trade it in for a smaller 50cc
scooter from an inferior manufacturer even though it would have saved me $100 a
month in insurance and been parkable on any sidewalk in this city.

It wasn’t until earlier this evening that I realized that I’ve been applying the
same values to my professional life too. I’m not willing to settle for the cheap
and easy any more: the quick hacks, the one offs, the un-reusable code, and
short sighted choices. It’s just not worth it. I have better things to do with
my life than deal with the consequences of being cheap.

I just hope I am able to live up to the values I have unwittingly instilled in
myself.

What about you? What excuses are you making for the fact that you keep cutting
corners and settling for the cheap shit in what you buy and what you do?
